"The Woman on the Boat"
During a study being done by the team doctor for the San Diego Chargers, Dr. Gary Losse, something was discovered, completely by accident, that will change history forever. The purpose of the study was to determine whether using knee braces on patients during rehabilitation would improve their recovery after reconstructive ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) surgery. Fifty people participated in the study, however, one middle aged woman was recovering more than five (5) times faster than the others. The doctor was stumped as to why this was happening. The woman was not particularly athletic and did exactly what everyone else was doing. Finally the doctor found that she lived "…on a boat out in the San Diego Harbor." She was getting proprioceptive and vestibular neurosensory training just standing and walking on her boat! The question then became how could we duplicate the motion of a boat in a clinical setting, The SportKAT? with its patented variable pressure bladder was the answer. The SportKAT was used extensively in Sports Medicine both for post-injury rehabilitation that enabled the players to get back on the field sooner and also as part of their physical training. The SportKAT performed brilliantly and many of the professional sports teams continue to use it to this day.
Enter the US Navy
In 2000, Dr. Michael Hoffer, the Director of the Spatial Orientation Center at the Balboa Naval Hospital in San Diego saw the SportKAT and surmised that it could help his vertigo stricken jetfighter pilots. He developed a protocol that called for the pilots to spend 15 minutes per day on the SportKAT for 20 days. The pilots were grounded because of their vertigo. The fully recovered pilots were back in the cockpit doing what the Navy had spent over $1,000,000 to train them to do.

SportKAT® for dizzy patients?
Dr. Hoffer and Dr. Gottshall work together at the Naval Hospital and they see all kinds of dizzy patients. So they selected 140 patients that had a variety of problems causing dizziness and vertigo. The treatment with the SportKAT was 97% effective after the first set of sessions. Diseases included Meniere’s Disease, Vestibular Neuronitis, Prebystasis, Head Trauma, Ataxia, Post Concussion, Multiple Sclerosis, Vertiginous Migraines, and Parkinson’s.
